Time for Tubes

We took Logan to the ear, nose and throat specialist today because last week we went back to our pediatrician because Logan still wasn't sleeping well and was digging in his ear. She checked his ear and the one that had cleared up the week before was infected again and the other was only a little bit better. This was after a week on the pediazole and a week of being on omnicef before that. She suggested giving him a shot of rocephin, a powerful drug they use as a last resort that is also used to treat meningitis. She said it's overkill for an ear infection but that it should kick the infection. I agreed to try this and then learned that it will be much more painful for him than his normal immunization shots because it's much thicker. So Logan got his second flu shot and this rocephin shot, it was horrible, he did not like it at all. Normally he recovers quickly, but it took a few minutes to calm him down. We had to wait for 20 minutes to make sure he didn't have a reaction so after a few minutes of crying, we got back to playing and Logan was happy. He had no reaction so we were allowed to go. Our doc recommended going to see the ENT also. Said normally she doesn't send kids there until they have had 6 ear infections, but since we couldn't get rid of this one, she wanted us to go. She thought this shot would do the trick, but said if he wasn't sleeping better by Saturday to bring him in because they can give this shot up to 3 times. So off we went, didn't sleep well as expected that night, but Friday he slept all night! We were very excited. But Saturday, he was very upset while Jason was putting him down for a nap. I was off shopping and Jason called and said to come home. I got home, learned he was digging in his ear again so we packed him up and got to the doctor's office about 2 minutes before they closed. Doc checked his ears again said they weren't getting better so he needed another shot. This time 2 different nurses gave him a shot in each leg at the same time. Did not like it of course, but since we didn't have to wait around, I took him outside quickly and he calmed down. By Monday he still wasn't sleeping well so back we went and he got another shot.

So today the ENT doctor checked his ears and said that he had a lot of very thick fluid in both ears, his right ear was worse. He said it's so thich because it's been there awhile, building up for a couple months. I told him how he has been sick since mid september, so he wasn't surprised. He said he didn't want to put him on any more drugs because he has already been on so much lately. Suggested we do tubes to relieve the pressure from the fluid. Asked how he was sleeping and eating because those 2 things are usually affected by fluid buildup. He is okay with eating, but sleeping is another story. He takes 45 minutes or more to fall asleep at night and we have to stay in the room with him (he checks for us often) until he falls asleep. He is very antsy when he lays down, because it hurts apparently. He said we would have a totally "different baby" once we got tubes. I said he was such a good baby now, during the day, that I can't imagine having a better one! But apparently the nighttime will be much better. Can't wait to get back to the days were we just put him in his crib at night and walked out and didn't hear from him again until the morning. They checked his hearing today too which came back normal. That was interesting, we went into a little booth and Logan sat on my lap. There was a speaker with Barney and another speaker with another character on top on the other side that lit up when the sound was on. He was supposed to turn to the toy when he heard the sounds out of the speakers. He did pretty good, they said a couple times the noise was on the left and he turned right first, but that it was still normal. They then put a little camera thing in his ear to check his eardrums, it then gave a printout that was supposed to show peaks to show that sound waves were getting through the eardrums. There were no peaks on his sheet. So that wasn't so good. So we now have a surgery date for Dec. 29th at 7 am, we have to get there at 6:30! Very early for us! Wish it was sooner so he would feel better and we could all get some sleep! But at least there is an end in sight to his pain.

Oh yea, we also saw yesterday that he has 2 molars! One is all the way through and the other is most of the way in. So apparently during all his other pain issues he had some teething pain too.

That's it for now! Hope everyone has a great Christmas!
